چکیده

23 January 2016, Vol. 106, No. 1 Heart failure (HF) is a major public health challenge, accounting for significant morbidity and premature mortality globally, including in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).[1] Owing to high prevalence and poor clinical outcomes, HF is associated with recurrent hospitalisation and substantial healthcare expenditure.[2] In contrast to Western countries, where HF is considered a disease of older persons, in SSA it affects younger individuals.[1-3] Acute decompensated HF is the most common primary diagnosis for patients admitted to hospital with heart disease in SSA, and it is encountered at all levels of care.[1,3,4] The goals of the clinical approach to HF include: (i) correctly diagnosing the clinical syndrome of HF; (ii) identifying the underlying cause; and (iii) implementing an effective management strategy for symptom control, prolonging survival and reversing factors that predispose to precipitation of HF exacerbations.

Anaemia and iron deficiency in heart failure: epidemiological gaps, diagnostic challenges and therapeutic barriers in sub-Saharan Africa

Anaemia and iron deficiency (ID) are common and of prognostic importance in heart failure (HF). In both conditions the epidemiology, diagnosis and therapies have been extensively studied in high-income countries but are still largely unexplored in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The lack of adequate and robust epidemiological data in SSA makes it difficult to recognise the significance of anaemia and...

Prevalent diabetes mellitus in patients with heart failure and disease determinants in sub-Saharan Africans having diabetes with heart failure: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION Heart failure (HF) is the final common pathway for most cardiovascular disease (CVDs). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major contributor to CVD burden and an independent predictor of mortality in patients with HF. However, the epidemiology of DM in African patients with HF is less well described. The current proposal is for a systematic review to assess the prevalence of DM in HF and t...

Building local capacity for genomics research in Africa: recommendations from analysis of publications in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2004 to 2013

Background The poor genomics research capacity of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) could prevent maximal benefits from the applications of genomics in the practice of medicine and research. The objective of this study is to examine the author affiliations of genomic epidemiology publications in order to make recommendations for building local genomics research capacity in SSA. Design SSA genomic epidem...

Epidemiology of ischaemic heart disease in sub-Saharan Africa

BACKGROUND The epidemiology of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains largely enigmatic. Major obstacles to our understanding of the condition include lack of reliable health statistics, particularly cause-specific mortality data, inadequate diagnostic capabilities, shortage of physicians and cardiologists, and misguided opinions. METHODS This review of the epidemio...
